Service a Window Air Conditioner

1. Pull the Air Conditioner
First, you need to pull your air conditioner out of the window. There are two ways to do this. In the first, you remove the working components of the air conditioner from its case (cover) while the unit is still in the window:
- Turn the power off by unplugging the air conditioner.
- Remove the front cover and the filter frame.
- If necessary, unscrew the control panel and set it aside.
- Locate and unscrew the bolts securing the inner frame to the case.
- Remove the motor and condenser by pulling it up and out of the case.
If taking the unit apart in the window isn't working for you, or you'd prefer to work on it elsewhere, perhaps to reduce the potential for greasy stains, do this instead:
- Turn the power off by unplugging the air conditioner.
- Remove any screws securing the unit to the movable sash above it.
- Raise the sash above the unit far enough to be able to reach out and support the outside end with one hand.
- With your other hand, remove any screws and loosen any clamps securing the air conditioner to the window frame and sill.
- With your outside hand, lift the unit up and into the room. Use your other hand to support the front of the unit as you lift it in.
- Carry your air conditioner to wherever you want to work as you take it apart.
- Follow the steps above to remove the motor and compressor from the case.
